Computing Centre

The Computing Centre at DMSC is currently in both an operational and a design phase, and its mission is twofold:

network cable
  • To provide scientific computing services and computing capacity (High Performance Computing, HPC) to the ESS divisions in the planning, construction and commissioning phases of the ESS facility in Lund.
  • To develop, design and build expertise and systems in areas relevant required to support the scientific use case once ESS becomes operational.

The ESS DMSC hardware and systems are hosted at the DMSC premises outside Copenhagen and at a data center located at the ESS main site in Lund.

In order to support the needs for scientific computational capacities required to design, build, commission and operate ESS, DMSC is providing a mid-size HPC cluster available for users performing work for ESS.

The cluster consists of the following components:

  • 120 compute nodes with a total of 4092 cores
  • 891TB of storage of various flavours (fast parallel, slower sequential)
  • Ethernet for service management
  • An InfiniBand network (QDR and HDR), implementing the interconnect between nodes, and between the nodes and the storage system
  • A batch-system for handling jobs

The Computing Centre provides a number of vital software services for the development of ESS.

In addition to running the high performance cluster, the Computing Centre also provides a number of infrastructure services for the use of ESS staff.

Development

Software development is a vital part of the development of the European Spallation Source. Developers working on the ESS project are hosted in a number of different countries and it is therefore vital that they have the right software at their disposal for collaboration. The Computing Centre therefore hosts a number of services which enables this collaboration to take place successfully:

  • Repository managers (Gitlab)
  • Continuous integration (Jenkins)
  • Build servers for Linux, Windows and Mac OSX
Internal Services

The Computing Centre also hosts a number of internal services that are required to run a modern data centre, these include:

  • A backup system located at an off-site location.
  • Support software (Request Tracker)
  • Virtualisation system (Ovirt and OpenStack)
  • Foreman and Puppet for deployment and provisioning of servers and services.
  • Monitoring (using Icinga, OSSEC and bespoke monitoring systems for proprietary systems)
  • High performance and resilient storage systems (Spectrum Scale and ZFS)
  • DNS
  • LDAP for user management
  • Foreman and Puppet for deployment, provisioning and configuration change management.
