Experimental Halls
LoKI:
The detector vessel for the LoKI instrument was delivered on site this week. It is now stored in the northwest end of Experimental Hall 2, before installation starts in the other end of the hall. The tank is 12,5 metres long with a 3.5-metre diameter, and was manufactured by AVS engineering and Cadinox in Spain, as part of the UK's in-kind contribution to ESS via STFC.
ESTIA:
Selene guide number one for the instrument ESTIA has arrived at ESS. Manufactured by AVS Engineering in Spain, the 4-meter-long component was pre-installed at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI), as part of the Swiss in-kind contribution to ESS. Installation of a guide carrier and vacuum vessel will now start in the east sector bunker inside Experimental Hall 1.
Target
Monolith port tubes
Scaffolding is in place and the Monolith vessel has been covered with tarpaulin to protect from dust. 39 port tubes are to be welded to the openings of the vessel. The first step is to install bottom plates to the base plates already in place in the R6 area around the Monolith. Two bottom plates and two top plates are on the road from the manufacturer ENSA, in Spain.
Welding of the port tubes to the vessel will be done under the in-kind agreement with ESS Bilbao, Spain.
High bay floor valves
The installation of floor valves for the circular openings to the Active Cells is in progress. Several layers of side shielding base plates are to be installed in a frame around the area. This will be followed by floor plates and a shield door on rails. These works are part of the UKAEA in-kind agreement with ESS.
Active Cells
The large hatch to the Active Cell’s maintenance cell has been opened to allow for the lowering of equipment for the start of installation of the intrabay door, separating the two cells.
Target Entrance
Installation of revolving doors is in progress by the entrance on ground level, as well as on the top floor where there will be a sluice entrance to the Target high bay.
Brackets for more cladding panels to be mounted for the cantilever roof protruding over the Target Entrance building and the adjacent passage in to Experimental Hall 1 are in place.
The area outside the Target Entrance building connecting to the Campus plaza and ground concrete has been prepared by the Skanska civil works team. Ground concrete will be poured after the summer holidays.
Accelerator
Test Stand 2
Testing of the first elliptical cryomodule installed in the bunker was temporarily stopped to allow for an exchange of the previously used modulator to an ESS serial-produced model. Prior to the stop, a quick cooldown was performed, to test some functionalities. Once the modulator swap and subsequent reconnection is completed, conditioning and cooling tests will continue.
The second serial-produced medium beta cryomodule is arriving on the ESS site from CEA, France, on Friday 2 July.
RFQ conditioning
In the normal conducting section of the linac RFQ conditioning is progressing, at increasing power and frequency.
Spokes section valve boxes
Four valve boxes and header units for the spokes cryogenic distribution system are expected for delivery on site from IJC Lab, France, this week. Six valve boxes are already in place in the spoke section of the Linac, three of those with header units mounted.
