Target Monolith
The installation of outer shielding blocks is complete. Three layers of shielding, weighting approximately 1500 tonnes, are in place surrounding the Monolith vessel. Survey and alignment of the area is now in progress.
In preparation for a cleanroom installation, which will be built around the Monolith connection cell, the entire high bay is subject to deep cleaning.
Active Cell
The in-cell grapple crane for the Active Cell is place. The crane beam, crab hook and wheel boxes were preassembled on the high bay, before the lift was conducted. In-kind partner UKAEA are responsible for the installations of a remote handling system in the Active Cell.
Target mock-up and test stand
The Mock Up and Test Stand (MUTS) has been cleaned and covered with protection. In here, the Target wheel, drive unit and shaft will be tested soon.
In-bunker installations
Bunker wall blocks have been temporarily removed in the south sector (for instruments ODIN and DREAM) as well as the west sector (for NMX, CSPEC and BIFROST). Whilst preparations to install the wall inserts are ongoing in the two short instrument halls, the wall inserts are assembled, aligned and vacuum tested inside a tent in the long instrument hall.
The first in-bunker installation will take place on the west side, where the wall insert and neutron guide for BIFROST will be lifted in place.
Normal Conducting Linac
Whilst the Accelerator operations team continues conditioning of the Drift Tube Linac (DTL) and beam commissioning activities from the control room, fitting of equipment to allow for 12 operator work stations in the ESS main control room goes on.
Preparations for a Safety Readiness Review allowing for beam commissioning up to the faraday cup of DTL tank 1 are ongoing. The review is to be held on 4-5 May.
