Italian INFN, National Institute for Nuclear Physics, visited ESS for meetings with their ESS counterparts, a site tour, and an opportunity to interact with Italian staff at ESS.
The Italian participation in ESS is coordinated by the INFN, which is internationally recognised for its scientific and technical expertise in particle accelerators. Italy utilises the know-how of laboratories built over many years in large European Research Infrastructures, such as XFEL and CERN, in its contribution to the success ESS. This is achieved in the form of in-kind contributions through collaboration with other ESS member states and with Italian industry.
INFN has participated in the realisation of the European neutron source since 2009. The inauguration of the Ion Source and Low energy Beam Transport (LEBT), designed and built in Italy at the Southern National Laboratory in collaboration with other ESS in-kind partners from ESS’ member states, in the autumn of 2018 was the first major technical component commissioned at ESS. The INFN contribution to ESS will be completed with the delivery of the Drift Tube Linac (DTL), a component able to accelerate the beam up to a speed equalling almost a third of the speed of light, as well as medium-beta elliptical cavities used in part of the superconducting linac following the DTL.
INFN plays an important role in the project, and while some contributions are completed, their researchers continue to work towards the completion of the facility as a whole, including bids on the Italian contributions to TREX and VESPA. The Italian in-kind contributions coordinated by INFN also encompass work by Italian organisations Southern National Laboratories (LNS), the Legnaro National Laboratories (LNL), the INFN Sezione Torino, the Accelerators and Superconductivity Applied Laboratory (LASA), National Research Council (CNR) and Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste.
