Last week on the construction site, the circular walls of the Target Monolith were cast in heavy concrete. Hanging eight metres above the Target Station’s (D02) base slab, these walls will surround the target wheel at the heart of the ESS facility. They are 800 millimetres thick and form a diameter of more than 11 metres. The next step for the Monolith construction will be to reinforce and cast the top vault.
Internal finishing is now in progress in the E03 and E04 laboratory buildings, and large internal viewing windows have been fitted to look out over the long-range instrument hall and beamline gallery. Across the site to the east, the Logistics Building (F03) is nearly ready for walls and a roof. It should be weather-tight by the middle of October.
Outside the Cryo-Compressor Building (G04), the last of the cryoplant’s 19 outdoor helium tanks was delivered and installed. And finally, the massive installation of process piping running from building to building across the site is moving ahead quickly, with completion scheduled for November.
