Accelerator
Works continue inside the DTL workshop. This week our colleagues from Italian in-kind partner INFN have been performing vacuum and leak tests of the Drift Tube Linac tanks and consecutive tightening of sealings.
The installation of the safety entrance system in the Front End building, the Personnel and Material Access Systems, is complete, and right now cables are labelled in order to prepare for commissioning activities.
Waveguide testing and cable pulling activities continue throughout the Gallery and Linac.
Target
The ESS Target Monolith Vessel is now en route from Spain to Lund by ship and the shipment is expected to arrive next week. The vessel comes in two parts; the lower vessel, weighing almost 30 tonnes, and the medium vessel at around 10 tonnes. The two parts will be lifted in from the Transport Hall to the high bay via the overhead crane currently under commissioning
At the same time, three port blocks, which will contain the tubes to house the neutron beam port insertions (NBPI), have been delivered and are currently being prepared in an area inside Experimental Hall 3. These will be welded to the vessel.
Target installation works are ongoing in several areas, including ventilation pipes on high bay, a drainage system in the Utility building ready for pressure tests shortly, installation of a Monolith relief line and a water purification system in the Utility building. The Target helium cooling system installation has also started, with further installations planned inside the Accelerator to Target (A2T) building early next year.
Electrical containment installations by UK in-kind partner UKAEA/RACE is progressing in the Active Cell and inside the Technical Galleries surrounding the Active Cell in a u-shape. This includes support brackets, fixings, cable ladders and earthing. Welding of flange plates is also ongoing inside the Active Cell.
The sandwich facades for the Accelerator to Target (A2T) building were completed this week, TRP roofing is now ongoing, with roof membrane to follow mid-October. The 32-metre-high A2T stack will be delivered and installed next week.
In the Target Entrance building, all steel frames are in place for the walls and gypsum walls, as well as in-wall installations (piping and electricity), are in progress. The ESS Integrated Control Systems division are set to start installations for the ESS main control room on first-floor level in December 2020.
Steel cladding continues on high bay level.
Experimental Halls & Labs
The construction team for the BIFROST cave are back on site after a few weeks away. The fourth layer walls were cast this week, with now just one layer and the precast roof panels left to do before structural completion.
Electrical infrastructure works continue inside the large, curved hall – with cable pulling in the newly installed cable ladders coming up.
ESS NSS division has started the installation of the steel frame for the north and west sectors of the shielding bunker inside Experimental Hall 2. This week supports and brackets have been installed in the ground plates, for steel columns to follow. Installation of concrete blocks is set to start by the end of October.
The crane beams for the overhead crane serving Experimental Hall 2 are in place, the crane will be installed during October and be operational before the end of the month. Top sandwich panels for the west gable wall were mounted this week, including brackets for the cantilever roof.
Installation of the last steel columns for the gable wall facing Experimental Hall 2 has started and the lab building to Experimental Hall 2 has received the last two hollow-core slabs for the top floor, and screed has been cast. Sandwich panel façade installation continues.
The last two of the 52-metre-long roof trusses for Experimental Hall 1 were mounted. Electrical and ventilation installations are ongoing in the bunker area. The inner runway for the bunker crane is in place and a scaffolding tower for the bunker crane console installation is currently assembled.
Mounting of glass facades is in progress for the lab to Experimental Hall 1, as well as sandwich panel installation. Roofing is complete, gypsum walls and in-wall installations are ongoing on all floors.
As the steel skeleton for the Beamline Gallery building part 2 is complete, a safety net has been put in place and roofing works are now ongoing.
