Accelerator
Drift Tube Linac (DTL)
Concrete blocks for the DTL1 Faraday Cup are being delivered to the normal conducting linac, with Installation of this shielding structure to start shortly.
Installation of DTL tank 1 continues. Alignment, cooling connection, vacuum component installation and leak tests will follow.
Radio-Frequency power tests
Commissioning of the RF system continues on the gallery side. Additional shielding for the klystron to DTL4 is in place. Low power tests of the DTL3 klystron are completed.
Cryomodule testing
Cooling and conditioning of the cavities of the first serial-produced medium beta cryomodule continue inside the test stand 2 bunker. Cavities are currently operated at 2 Kelvin. Testing this first cryomodule is foreseen to be completed soon, which will be followed by testing of the next cryomodule.
Target
Active Cell
Grouting of the floor valves above the Active Cells has been performed. More parts for the floor valve structure are being delivered via the Transport Hall.
Installation of lower intrabay doors separating the process and maintenance cell of the Active Cell is in progress.
Target roof
Cladding of the roof structure has started both over the area between Target Entrance and Lab D08 and the Transport Hall connection to Experimental Hall 2. Panels of aluminium lamellae are being mounted to the protruding steel skeleton.
Target facades
Façade cladding is ongoing at the Accelerator to Target (A2T) front, with a view to be completed mid-September.
Target Entrance
In the Target Entrance building, installations are substantially completed and under test and commissioning (SAT3).
The interior of the building, where ESS will house the Main Control Room for operations, is close to being finalised; Revolving doors, glass walls, steel doors, terrazzo flooring and handrails for the staircases, epoxy floors, carpets are al in place. Bathrooms and kitchenettes are fully installed.
Works still ongoing include fitting of skirting boards, sunscreens for windows and final repair and commissioning of the elevators.
ESS Integrated Control Systems (ICS) division has parallel access to the main control room on the first floor and the server rooms.
Experimental Halls
Beamline shielding
An extensive amount of lower and upper shielding blocks has been delivered to the long experimental hall and surrounding areas for installation to start shortly. Neutron guide shielding for the beamlines for BIFROST and CSPEC will be first out.
Marking in the floor inside Experimental Hall 2 (D03) adjacent to the west bunker wall will pave the way for installation of the first beamline shielding blocks here. The hall overhead crane will be used to position the blocks. After some hook adjustments, the final Site Acceptance Test (SAT3) of the overhead cranes in the two short instrument halls was performed by Skanska.
NSS bunker
Installation of the east bunker wall inside Experimental Hall 1 is ongoing. Once this is completed in mid-September, the team will move over to the Experimental Hall 2 to build the side wall for the west sector bunker.
Bunker cranes
Next week Skanska will start the reinforcement work for the bunker crane runway in Experimental Hall 2. Installation of the modified bunker crane is expected to start late October, with final handover to ESS in the last week of November.
The Experimental Hall 1 bunker crane will follow a few weeks later.
Bunker cranes are critical to install the bunker roof shielding blocks.
E02 Beamline Gallery
In the Beamline Gallery, all SAT3 tests are done and the overhead crane is operational.
Painting of columns has started, to be completed before Sectional Handover Inspection (SHIN) on 8 September and handover to ESS on 13 September.
Civil works (earthworks)
Landscape completion works are ongoing for the future green areas of ESS. Two thirds of the 70 hectares of land for the ESS facility will be green land.
Outside the Target Entrance building, installation of ground concrete connecting to the Campus plaza is in progress. Reinforcement is in place for the second part, with concrete casting to follow. These works will be completed by mid-September.
Fresh asphalt is poured for external areas to D06 substation and D08 lab.
