Accelerator
Klystron Gallery
RF power tests are ongoing in the Klystron Gallery. Three RF power stations have been tested in their final position in RF cell 120. The fourth and last RF power station for cell 120a is currently subject to tests inside Test Stand 3.
Cryomodules
RF warm conditioning of the medium beta cryomodule placed inside the bunker was completed this week, with cooldown of the four cavities following.
Another serial-produced cryomodule has been delivered to ESS from CEA in France this week.
Four spoke cryomodules, fully tested at the Freia lab at Uppsala University, are currently stored in the ESS technical workshop building.
Target
Port tubes
Welding of port tubes to the vacuum vessel is ongoing in the area surrounding the Target Monolith. A team from ENSA, contracted by in-kind partner ESS Bilbao, is performing the works.
Cryogenic Moderator System (CMS)
Delivery of the cryogenic moderator system is expected soon, with installation on the top floor of the Accelerator to Target building planned to follow on 10 November. A crane will lift the over 5 tonnes heavy piece from ground level and up to the Target roof level. A temporary wall will be removed, and later overpressure vents, so called explosion hatches, will be installed here.
Cantilever roof cladding
Mounting of aluminium lamellae on the Target roof structure has continued, and the panels on the east end of Experimental Halls 1 and 2 are substantially completed, leaving just the area above the Accelerator dog leg connecting to the Accelerator to Target façade.
Bolts are in place for the roof corner over D03 hall connecting to the cladding above D04 lab, with panels to be mounted soon.
Accelerator to Target building
The external staircase for the Accelerator to Target (A2T) building has been subject to installation. Lighting will be fitted.
Experimental Halls & Labs
Bunker crane
The reinforcement works for the bunker crane inside Experimental hall 2 were successfully completed. The same works are now nearing completion on the Experimental Hall 1-side, with a view to finalise the outer runway and remove the scaffolding by the end of the week.
LOKI
Drilling and installation of anchors for the instrument LOKI continue inside Experimental Hall 2, for base plate installation to follow. This is the first part of the on site installation for the LoKI instrument at ESS.
BIFROST
Metal stairs are to be installed from the ground to the roof level of the BIFROST scientific cave. This will facilitate access when a roof hatch is opened and items lifted in with the cave jib crane.
The detector vacuum vessel has been temporarily lifted out from the cave, to allow for the fitting of lining with thin cadmium sheets.
RML lab
On the ground floor of lab building D08, ESS and contractor Sanber Ltd, working under the STFC UK in-kind agreement for lab installations at ESS, are progressing with the installation of a Radioactive Materials Lab (RML). In-ceiling installations, piping and an emergency shower are in place, and the lab equipment to be installed has arrived on site. Fume hoods for the RML lab was already installed this summer.
Civil construction - towards completion
All remaining areas, in the Target station and adjacent buildings, subject to completion by ESS civil construction partner Skanska, have been subject to pre-inspections and site acceptance testing is in preparation for handover.
The last few sectional handover inspections will be held in coming days, with sectional handover meetings for all remaining buildings following in November. Final handover is scheduled for December.
Earthworks
The SEC civil works team has substantially completed the earthworks and asphalting on the entire site. Final works include the ditches along Southern Gallery Road and planting of trees in prepared areas within Circular Road as well as the hilly landscaped area established in the south parts of the ESS site.
