Drive unit installation in Target Mock-up and Test Stand
After a series of tests performed in the on-site technical workshop, the Target wheel drive unit is now ready to be installed onto the top shaft in the Target Mock-up and Test Stand (MUTS). This will allow for handling and rotation tests to be performed, prior to the installation of the Target Wheel, shaft, drive unit and the monitoring plug into the Target Monolith vessel later this year.
Monolith inner shielding
The installation of inner shielding blocks to the Monolith vessel is in progress, with the first batch of blocks now in place.
Cryogenic Moderator System getting ready for commissioning
German In-kind partner FZ Jülich has been on site this week, to perform an inspection of the sensors in the Cryogenic Moderator System (CMS) installed in the Hydrogen Room on the top floor of the Accelerator to Target (A2T) building.
Cryomodules
The on-site Test Stand is being prepared for test and cooldown of another medium beta cryomodule. A test installation of a cryomodule in the linac tunnel is in preparation to ensure that connections of cables, waveguides and valveboxes etc are tested before permanent installation of cryomodules starts in the autumn.
Leak testing of the Cryogenic Distribution System (CDS) is ongoing in the superconducting part of the Linac. The entire CDS line - from the cryoplant in the Coldbox Hall to the end box in the Spoke section and back – must be leak-tight and tested before the installation of cryomodules in the tunnel can start.
Port plug trial installation
The ESS Rigging Team, together with Target Installation and Designers, have performed a trial installation of the first neutron beam port plug for beamline N8. The 4,5 ton-piece was lifted in place using the newly installed bunker crane, and was inserted using an installation tool bench making it possible to smoothly slide the plug into the narrow space of the port tube.
ODIN
Another casting of the ODIN cave base slab was performed this week.
Inside the south sector bunker, Swiss Neutronics and Axilon are progressing with the installation of neutron guide housing and optics for ODIN. The installation will be followed by vacuum and leak tests.
DREAM
The support structure for the detector vessel has been lifted inside the cave and installation is now in progress.
BEER
Installation of the neutron guide for BEER is ongoing in the fan-shaped Beamline Gallery. This section of neutron guide starts 80 metres from the Target and is 64,5 metres long. After installation of the support structure and cross-beams, resting on the row of concrete piles, the vacuum housing is mounted. Inside, the neutron guide is assembled and precisely aligned.
