Cryogenic Distribution System commissioning
We are approaching cooldown of the Cryogenic Distribution System. With just a few weeks left of preparations, final works on the end box is ongoing. Pressure transmitters have been mounted, and the pipe connection to a rupture disc is under installation.
Cryomodules
Cooldown of first high beta cryomodule (is in progress inside the Test Stand 2 bunker.
Another high beta cryomodule was delivered from CEA this week, which means four out of a total 21 are at ESS.
French in-kind partner CEA are responsible for the fitting of high beta cavities delivered from STFC-UK and medium beta cavities from INFN-Italy into the cryomodule tanks, before delivering them to ESS for further testing.
Drift Tube Linac
The last Drift Tube Linac tank to be installed before the next round of RF conditioning and subsequent beam commissioning – DTL2 – is under preparation on the transport trolley.
The water manifold adapter, delivered from INFN, was fitted onto DTL3 in the tunnel. Vacuum testing is next.
Target
MUTS
In the Target Mock-Up and Test Stand, rotation tests of the Target wheel assembly continue.
Monolith
The cleanroom expansion around the Target Monolith has been completed. There is now space inside for a welding workshop and a chemical cleaning area.
Instruments
Test Beamline
The Test Beamline cave walls are in place and have been painted. In-cave ducts were installed through drilled holes in the concrete floor.
LOKI
Installation of raceways continue along the cave walls. The collimation vacuum vessel was delivered from AVS/Cadinox (Spain). The collimation system will be installed onto already installed plinths on the support structure adjacent to the outer wall of the north sector bunker. Its job is to control the size and divergence of the beam through various slits and guides to be installed inside the vessel.
DREAM
In the south sector of the Experimental Hall 1, an in-bunker chopper base is in place for DREAM. Recently the bunker wall insert was installed.
NMX
A base structure for the in-bunker neutron guide is in place, and the first vacuum tests of the three guide sections were performed. NMX occupies beamline W1 in the west sector.
NSS In-bunker
NBOA cooling pipes are in place within the LSS frames in all four sectors inside the bunker.
NSS is ready for installation of Neutron Beam Port Inserts and Plugs, starting in the north sector.
Chopper workshop
Construction of a chopper workshop is completed. It will be used to prepare and test choppers for all instrument beamlines.
