Target
Casting work included the vault for the small house and the high L-shaped wall for the big house on top of the Monolith high bay slab, walls for stair towers/lift shafts in laboratory 1A and in the Transport Hall, two further base slabs for the Experimental Hall, the vault for the Utility high bay, the first part of the Active Cell high bay vault, and walls for the Utility elevator shaft on top of the vault: this shaft goes all the way down to basement level.
Walls and slabs for the Transport Hall also progressed, as well as bottom slabs for Experimental Halls 1 and 3. Full height walls in the Technical Gallery surrounding Active Cell in a u-shape, are still ongoing; the high bay vault will follow.
Target Division was granted parallel access to the Monolith area to perform time-critical works in the heart of the facility. The scope included:
* Base plate, vessel support and ground shielding in the Monolith puck area
* Shielding and pipe support in the 'Drift to Target' (D2T)
A mobile crane has been placed on the south side of the Monolith Building to lift in the equipment.
The centre pillar and support ring for the target vessel support have been installed, and will be followed by 24 wedges of ground shielding, to be placed inside the puck in three layers. The Monolith vessel, containing the tungsten bricks, is scheduled for delivery to site in January 2020. This is a major in-kind contribution from ESS Bilbao (Spain). It will come in two pieces weighting approx. 40 tonnes each.
Stakeholder works have started in the heart of the facility - part of the steel tower and scaffolding has been dismantled exposing the Monolith's extraordinary round shape. Inside the Monolith, steel blocks for aligning the base plate are being positioned.
A lot of radiation shielding is required inside the proton beam drift room, hence all the steel plates being installed. The support structure for the beam pipe in 'Drift to Target' is in place. A concrete plug and concrete lids for the Target's concrete area will be cast later this year.
Work will start on superstructure erection in several buildings on site; Admin (the back entrance to the Target Building), the laboratory building to Experimental Hall 2, and Monolith/Utility will all be equipped with steel columns starting in July. At the same time, Lambda will finish the last few slabs for Experimental Halls 1 and 2.
Accelerator
On 12 June the Medium Energy Beam Transport (MEBT) was delivered from Spanish in-kind partner ESS Bilbao: another major component for the Accelerator Tunnel, comprising 19 packages. Mounting will be performed on site by a team from ESS Bilbao, supported by the Linac Group of the ESS Accelerator Division. The RFQ will be delivered after the summer, and will be fitted between the LEBT (Low-Energy Beam Transport) and the MEBT.
Nine valve boxes are now in place for the Cryogenic Distribution System, with another six units being delivered to site shortly. Installation of waveguides was completed in the medium beta part of the Accelerator tunnel; valve boxes for the Cryogenic Distribution System (CDS) will follow the waveguides.
General
Central Utility Building: The floors inside the building were completed. Slab castings in the process hall approached completion. Gypsum and painting work to start in the rear substation area.
Gallery Buildings: Grinding and dust binding in the G01 emergency exits were carried out. IFJ PAN continue with installation in the high beta Linac.
Experimental Halls: Epoxy floors were poured for the E03 laboratory building. Installation of lightning protection for Experiment Hall 1 began.
Civil Works: Asphalt is now in place outside the Substations to the Target and Experimental Halls 1 & 2.
Campus Project: Concrete prefab erection has now started for the B01 office building. A crane has been placed on the Campus worksite to facilitate these works.
Upcoming handovers to ESS
* 13 August: Logistics Centre - early access in July, for storage purposes.
* 15 August: Experiment Hall 3) part 1 of the Beamline Gallery, the Substation Building to Experiment Hall 3.
* Two Laboratory Buildings are due to be handed over in December.
