Target
Concrete works in the Target building are almost completed, with just a few castings left for the corner shielding in two areas, plus the Dog Leg cover and retaining wall on the north side of the tunnel. Concrete repairs and internal finishing work is ongoing in most parts of the building, as part of the Verified Self Inspection (VSI). Superstructure works continue, with completion of the steel structure on the Monolith/Utility high bay, including installation of the temporary crane beams. The Accelerator to Target, Active Cell/Technical Gallery, Target Entrance Building and one of the Lab buildings are all soon to begin superstructure work.
Excavation for piping is under way for more electrical feed to the Target area. Preparations are underway for casting a slab in the south corner of one the Lab buildings - this will be used to cast concrete hatch lids. Completion of the external areas outside the Experimental Hall Buildings and the Sprinkler building is ongoing. Wall construction along the south perimeter of the site is also in progress.
General
Below the target area, there is a system of tunnels and culverts totalling 480 metres of installation galleries. Since March 2019, a team has been busy there installing cooling pipes, sprinklers, ventilation ducting, and cable ladder systems. These installations will be completed before the end of the year, which means the concrete works in one of the substations and one of the Lab buildings can be finalised. During the first half of 2020, the main power cabling from substation buildings will be installed, which will later enable energisation and commissioning of all systems in the rest of the Target building and Experimental Hall area.
Formwork for the approx. 8.5m high outer walls for the Waste Treatment Facility have started in the north part of the building. At the same time, reinforcement of the last two base slabs is ongoing, with one casting planned for next week and the last slab to be cast the following week.
