Target
More concrete has been added to the scope of the Dog Leg cover, meaning these works are now scheduled for completion in January 2020. In the A2T (Accelerator to Target), steel and precast is ongoing. In the Monolith/Utility high bay, welding of the crane beam and sandwich panel installation has started. The temporary crane will be installed early 2020, to enable ESS Target Division to lower the target vessel (2 x 30-tonne lifts). This vessel is the container and outer shielding for the Target Monolith, which will house the target's tungsten wheel.
ESS have gained parallel access to the Active Cell area to perform ceiling works in the maintenance and process cells. This involves framework, steel plates, anchor plates, penetrations and welding of the steel plates. A total of 51 concrete foundations have completed in order for equipment to go into the Utility building. Superstructure has also started for the Active Cell high bay, and steel pillars are already being put into place for one of the lab buildings.Pre-cast walls are ongoing for the Target Entrance Building.
The two lab buildings adjacent to the large Experiment Hall will be subject to Sectional Handover Inspection (SHIN) this week. This is carried out prior to handover to ESS and includes all disciplines in the building together with all the required test and system commissioning. Sectional handovers of two of the labs are scheduled for December.
Accelerator
After testing off-site at ESS Test Stand 3 and the RATS lab, the first Linac Warm Units (LWUs) have now arrived in the Accelerator tunnel. LWUs are components containing magnets and vacuum chambers and beam pipe. The units will sit in-between the cryomodules and in the beam transport area leading up to the Dog Leg.

FYI
Modulators are a key component at ESS, with the purpose of converting the power fed from the electrical grid to a pulse power suitable for klystrons, i.e. a reliable, constant and even electrical current. The 33 modulators at ESS have been designed in-house by the ESS Power Converters team. They have team been developed over the last few years, and the final design concept, offering a more compact, cheaper and more powerful solution, is now subject to serial production by in-kind partner ESS Bilbao in Spain. Three modulators are already being tested inside Test Stand 3 of the Klystron Gallery. The first modulator to be moved to its permanent position will be placed in the Gallery Building by the radio frequency (RF) cell, connecting to the Radio Frequency Quadrupole down in the tunnel: this is scheduled for the first quarter of 2020. Typically, there will be two ESS modulators in each RF cell powering eight klystrons, which provide the RF power for the Linac via the waveguides in the tunnel to the Gallery Building stubs.
General
In the Waste Building, the very last base slab was cast last week, and this week will see the first 8.8m high wall equipped with concrete.
Completion of the area outside the experimental buildings is ongoing. Final levelling and the laying of kerb stones and asphalt is in progress and will be completed next week.
