Target
Surface treatment is underway inside the Target Building, and epoxy painting is ongoing in the Utility Building as well as in the Monolith basement. The tipi tent structure for weather-protecting the Monolith area is complete on the Experimental Hall 1 side ,and is ongoing on the Hall 2 side. In the Active Cell and Technical Gallery internal sealing is ongoing, which includes watertight expansion joint covers made of rubber, and so called steel profiles.
ESS Target Division has gained parallel access to the Process and Maintenance cells inside the Active Cell, where they are busy installing crane rails on the corbels of both cells. Installation of stainless steel plates on the walls and floors will follow, starting in February. This steel cladding will cover the entire surface of the interior. Casting of the overmold of Tom’s Room is ongoing - this is done in sequence and will continue into February.
Superstructure erection has kicked off for Experimental Hall 2, starting with steel columns on top of the beamguide wall in between Hall 2 and the Beamline Gallery.
Experimental Halls
The first casting of the plinth for the NMX instrument cave was performed on 23 January - another casting of the central parts is planned shortly. The plinth will form a solid base for technical installations for the scientific instrument. This is the first of 15 planned instrument caves for the ESS facility - eight of these will be built inside the large Experimental Hall 1.
General
In the Waste Building, the outer walls are complete, and formwork and reinforcement of the inner walls in underway. All concrete works will be completed by May, and this summer we will continue with roof and facades.
