Target
The sandwich panels for the 1A lab building are in place for the back of the building (towards Hall 1), meaning the steel structure for the west gable of the Experimental Hall is now complete. With the steel envelope for the Hall almost complete, superstructure continues with more roof trusses, metal roof and sandwich panels.
Installation of the cantilever roof on the Hall 1 side will start shortly. On the Hall 2 side, the remaining steel columns on the east gable will be installed once sandwich panels are in place for the Hall 2 lab building. Installation of the bunker crane continues and MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing) are busy mounting ventilation ducts in the hall. Installation of hollow core slabs on the top level of the Hall 2 lab building and top screeds remain before work on the external sandwich envelope can begin. Prefab walls for the top level of the A2T (Accelerator to Target) are in place, and the remaining steel columns for this part of the buildings will be lifted in this week.
Painting of steel and bracings, as well as internal seals, are in place on the high bay level, MEP installations are ongoing, and preparations are now underway to start epoxy painting in a couple of weeks. In early September, part of the roof will be opened to allow installation of the large, permanent high bay crane. ESS will gain access to the Transport Hall to start with the mock-up area mid-September, and later that month the Monolith vessel is scheduled to arrive from ESS Bilbao. In part 1 of the Beam Line Gallery, the so-called seismic frame, closest to the beam line wall/Experiment Hall 2 is completed, and superstructure works will now continue for the connecting area.
Accelerator
The last T-stands have been positioned by the Dog Leg emergency exit, completing the installation of pre-cast upstands and elements for the Dog Leg area (top cover, retaining walls and concrete supports), which now allows the top fill of the berm. Compacted soil will be followed by a geomembrane, and seeds will be planted later this autumn to make this area as green as the rest of the Accelerator tunnel!
General
The Campus project is now in in its last phase, with the handover date drawing closer (end of December 2020). Façades on all three buildings were completed during the summer, and the focus is now on internal finishes and installations. Rain gardens have been installed and trees and seeds have been planted - the remaining work includes permanent walkways and the Campus plaza - a in-situ cast concrete floor for the external areas. Procurement of a restaurant provider is ongoing and will be announced later this autumn. the 'moving in date' for ESS staff is still aimed at Q1 2021.
Works continue with cladding of the Circular Road , as well as kerb stones and levelling/piping around the ponds. Work has also started on the rain garden in the LAN area just south of the Target.
