The third and final ESS Coldbox, the Target Moderator Cryoplant Coldbox, arrived on site last week after a long journey from Italy. It will provide 15-20K helium cooling for ESS Target moderator hydrogen circuits.
The cooling vessel weighs 38 tonnes and is the world’s largest helium refrigerator in this temperature range. The Coldbox will provide 30kW cooling power, needed to absorb the heat from ESS unique and innovative moderator set up.
The Coldbox is the first major Target system delivery to the ESS site, and was set inside the Gallery Building (G02), next to the Accelerator Coldbox already in place since last year.
The Coldbox was procured from the Swiss company Linde Kryotechnik and manufactured in Italy.
