Last week on the construction site, reinforcement and formwork for the Target Station Monolith’s high bay vault began. Its construction will include a number of specially engineered cast-in items from the ESS Target Division.
The large job of reinforcing and forming the massive Accelerator-to-Target tunnel walls has continued to progress. Casting of the Active Cells technical gallery, which surrounds the perimeter of the Active Cells area, is now moving toward completion. Construction of the nearby Transport Hall has also begun, with 47 tonnes of rebar to be delivered for the purpose this month. Other concrete castings were completed at the beamline wall at D03 and the base slab at D01. Construction of the Utility area’s base slab and walls also began last week, along with the foundation work for the D08 lab building.
Large underground heating pipes radiating out from the Central Utility Building (H01) continue to be installed throughout the site, including at the new gas storage buildings (H07, H08), which can be seen rising to the north of the target area.
The foundation for the Logistics Building (H10) was completed, with the superstructure to begin after the summer break. During the break, work on the Target Building, ESS installations, mechanical, electrical and plumbing works for the E-buildings, and some foundation works around the site will continue.
In the second half of 2018, the following milestones are expected to be hit at the construction site:
- The Monolith’s high bay vault will be completed.
- Procurement of superstructures and steel for the Target Building above the vault has already started and will continue throughout the autumn.
- Civil areas on the north side will be completed, inspected and handed over to ESS this autumn.
- The construction of the ESS Campus will begin.
