The ESS Data Management and Software Centre (DMSC) has successfully relocated to a new permanent site at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) campus in Lyngby, north of Copenhagen.
As of April 2024, the DMSC's new address at the DTU site in Lyngby outside Copenhagen has become the permanent location where the approximately 35 specialists will continue to build the ESS data pipeline, contributing to the readiness for the first ESS scientific activities in 2026 and the start of steady-state operations in 2028.
The DMSC is responsible for handling and managing the data generated by experiments conducted at ESS. DMSC develops and maintains the software needed to collect, process, and analyse the massive amounts of scientific data produced, making it accessible and useful for researchers.
The DMSC's integration into DTU, a university with a history of excellence in engineering and technology since its founding in 1829, offers a fertile environment for scientific research and development.
“For ESS, the move of our Data Management and Software Centre to the DTU campus is an important milestone towards the establishment of this fundamental part of the ESS organisation and future user experience”, says Director General Helmut Schober. “We look forward to supporting the DMSC management and colleagues to fully benefit from the new location and exploit synergies with the vibrant DTU’s academic and R&D environment.” |
The DMSC was previously located at the Cobis Centre near Nørreport in Copenhagen. With the lease agreement expiring at the end of 2023, a new contract was signed with DTU in November, and the physical move started in February this year.
“The move to the DTU campus was relatively smooth, thanks in large part to the tireless efforts of our administration team and the invaluable support from the Lund site, for which we are immensely grateful”, says Thomas Holm Rod, Head of ESS DMSC. “The new location poses some changes to our daily lives, such as a longer commute, but it also brings new opportunities: our new offices are a better fit for our working style compared to our previous locations, and the proximity to leading research institutes presents us with unique advantages. We are committed to leveraging these opportunities for the benefit of ESS, our DMSC staff, and the future users of ESS and our services.”
