Pascale Deen, Division Head for Spectroscopy at the ESS Science Directorate, has been appointed as Affiliate Professor in Solid State Physics and Neutron Scattering at the Niels Bohr Institute, University of Copenhagen.

Pascale is an expert in the study of fundamental magnetic materials, using neutron scattering techniques to discover new states of matter. Her recent research has primarily focused on exploring novel spin liquid states and classical frustrated magnetism. The use of inelastic neutron scattering has been central to these studies, and Pascale has played a key role in advancing neutron scattering instrumentation.

Pascale received her Ph.D. in 2003 from the University of Liverpool, where she utilised polarised x-ray and neutron scattering techniques to study exchange coupling and superconductivity in light rare earth alloys and superlattices. Her scientific journey continued with a post-doctoral position at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF), where she employed x-ray resonant magnetic scattering to expand her research into superlattice structures and heavy fermion magnetism. In 2006, Pascale joined the Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL) as an instrument scientist, focusing on neutron polarisation analysis and investigating heavy fermion physics and magnetic frustration.

In 2011, Pascale joined ESS to lead the development of neutron instrumentation, with a particular focus on inelastic neutron scattering instruments. Her contributions led to the creation of novel instrument concepts, and she served as the lead scientist for the cold chopper spectrometer CSPEC. Pascale has recently taken on the role of Division Head for Spectroscopy, and shortly after joining ESS, she was invited to become an affiliate associate professor at the University of Copenhagen, culminating in her recent promotion to affiliate professor.

Pascale Deen's Inauguration Lecture, titled "Neutron scattering as the essential tool for the study of exotic emergent magnetic states of matter," will be held on 30 August 2024, at 14:15, at the Niels Bohr Institute, Auditorium M at Blegdamsvej, University of Copenhagen.
