This month’s In-Kind Review Committee meeting has resulted in the endorsement of 39 agreements capturing an additional 25 percent of ESS In-Kind potential.

BRUNNSHÖG—The 10th European Spallation Source In-Kind Review Committee Meeting (IKRC10) was held October 4 and 5 at the ESS construction site
, resulting in endorsements of 39 agreements
totalling €172 million. Endorsed agreements move from the Committee to the ESS Council for full ratification, and most of these agreements will be presented to Council at its December meeting.
The October meeting marks a major step forward to reach the In-Kind potential
of the ESS Project, putting currently planned and agreed ESS In-Kind Contributions (IKCs) near the €300 million mark, or 40 percent of the in-kind goal. As of August of this year, the overall ESS project stood at 25 percent complete.
The endorsed agreements are between the ESS sub-projects and their institutional Partners. In many cases they formalise funding for work that has long been in progress, highlighting the good will and collaborative spirit that prevails in the ESS project. The 39 technical annexes represent work with 18 different institutional Partners representing 10 different Partner nations.
Other agreements include work for instrument design and engineering, in-progress Target systems, and ICS controls. The value of the 39 agreements endorsed in the October meeting alone represents nine percent of the total ESS budget and nearly one-fourth of the potential In-Kind Contribution to the ESS project. The ESS sub-project teams and the In-Kind Management team will work to maintain this momentum for the upcoming IKRC11 to be held in December. Another 40 agreements are expected to be presented at that meeting.
