ESS on behalf of the Swedish research council, Vetenskapsrådet (VR), has launched the SAKURA Mobility Programme – open to staff working at ESS and the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC), as well as researchers affiliated with Swedish and Japanese universities.
The SAKURA programme is an effort to strengthen scientific collaboration between Sweden and Japan, and focuses on neutron research and activities of the two neutron sources. A key aim of the recently inaugurated programme is to facilitate the exchange of knowledge and best practice methods, while building capacity using pulsed neutron scattering techniques between ESS and J-PARC, a research facility which has long served as a benchmark for ESS project.
The exchange of personnel, experiences, and know-how between these Big Science facilities and universities is an essential component in maintaining neutron instrumentation and research at the cutting edge of performance, and the new mobility programme will further build on such exchange of knowledge and experience.
During 2020, the first SAKURA Mobility Programme beneficiaries, will travel to Sweden or Japan for a period of anything from one week to six months, conducting strategic research leading to long-term collaboration in one of the four technical areas shown below.

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS | APPLICATION FORM |
Eligibility criteria and more information about the application process can be found in the Call for Applications. Proposals are evaluated by a committee composed of representatives of ESS, J-PARC, and the Swedish Neutron Scattering Society (SNSS). |
Qualified candidates are welcome to submit their applications together with the requested documentation by 14 April 2020, 15:00 (CEST) to sakura@esss.se. |
If you have questions about SAKURA, please send an email to sakura@esss.se.
The idea to launch SAKURA was born in connection to the 150th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Sweden and Japan, which the two countries celebrated last year. The European Spallation Source implements and administers the SAKURA Mobility Programme on behalf of VR.
